| Active, vibrant impasto oil painting on artist board by this listed American artist, Robert Bonfils, signed backwards, lower right, "Trebor Slifnob, 90." As the story goes, a newphew of Bonfils' was in need of funds, so in order to help him out, Bonfils signed several paintings backwards, and allowed the newphew to sell them quickly at a flea market in California. Every now and then a fine work of art with this "secret backward signature" shows up on the market, and is usually not recognized as having been painted by this well-known, prolific illustrator of paperback novel covers. One can almost feel the excitement in this painting, hear the thunder of the hooves as they meet the ground, see the whirling storm of dust on the track, and take in the tension of the jockeys as they near what surely must be the finish line. A rare, wonderful painting measuring 12" x 16" (30.48 x 40.64 cm), and nicely framed in wood to emphasize the work, to 17.5" x 21.5" x 2" (44.45 x 54.61 x 5.08 cm).
