19th Century Chinese Ivory Fan with Silk Embroidered Leaf. Guards are of carved ivory and ivory sticks are pierced. Embroidery is the dragon chasing the pearl. Mother-of-pearl spacers are on both sides of the rivet bar; attached knotted silk tassels. The accompanying lacquer box has gilt decoration on the outside lid, hand painted flowers and birds on silk, on the inside lid; fitted fan holder is of heavy paper. Original calligraphy markings on one end of the box. Fan measures about 9" long, 16" when fully open. Box is 10.75" long, 1.875" wide, 1.875" tall. The fan has several tiny splits in the leaf around the top edge, two larger splits at the base of the leaf (pictured), one guard is broken in two and a small side piece missing (pictured), the 8th from left stick is snapped although it does not show in the photos; light soiling from age. The Box has minor lacquer losses on the base (email us if you would like to see a photo); and minor losses to the interior painting detail. $14 US Shipping. |
