Fitch Wray was born in London, England, eventually moving to California in 1922, where he worked for many years as a Hollywood scene artist for the movie industry. These four small paintings were painted in Yucaipa, California where he later made his home and created works which he offered for sale.

Verne Lucinda McCann Gillespie was born in Wisconsin, later becoming a long-time resident of California, known for painting desert and coastal scenes of the area. In 1964 she became an exhibitor of the Twenty-Nine Palms Artists Guild. Her works are typically small, and are considered scarce.

Top paintings are signed "Verne Gillespie," lower left, 9" x 12" (22.86 x 30.48 cm) images on canvas, attractively framed to 14" x 17" x 2.50" (35.56 x 43.13 x 6.35 cm). Left is titled "Mojave Yucca," right is "Desert Sand Verbena," as noted on the painting stretchers.

The four lower paintings are all signed "Fitch Wray," three lower left, and one lower right. Painted on canvas panel, they each measure 5" x 5" (12.70 x 12.70 cm), identically framed to 6.50" x 6.50" x 1" (16.51 x 16.51 x 2.54 cm). An original paper label on the reverse of each states "Original Oil Painting on Canvas by Fitch Wray of Yucaipa, California."
