Fine example of mid-19th Century Signed, handpainted, Samson & Cie Porcelain Tea Caddy, Paris, France; oval in shape, raised white enameling in scroll design; polychrome armorial of dogs flanking a shield, crest and banner; florals on sides and verso, aubergene feathers at symmetrical points along the dotted diamond borders; gilded edges. Measurements: 4" x 2.75 x 4.75" (10.16 x 6.98 x 12.06 cm) tall. Condition: Excellent overall condition, base without issue, and only minor issues to the lid which includes two faint hairlines inside of the lid that we are able to see (one is visible on outside--look closely to left in photos). Two minute chips on lid rim (see photo no. 9 at 8 o'clock and 5 o'clock); roughness around lid rim appears to be original to manufacture. History: A caddy, or Asian "catti" was actually a unit of measure for dried tea leaves. Eventually, the container for a "catti" of tea, usually of wood, metal, or porcelain, took on the name of the measurement itself, and became a "tea caddy." Samson & Cie of Paris is famous for faithfully reproducing Chinese Export porcelain, and actually providing improvements to the pieces. As many of the Samson porcelain pieces are now antiques, themselves, they run a close second to the original Chinese Exports, and have the additional benefit of being affordable at about one-tenth the cost of the Chinese Exports pieces. |
