This small Box is likely turned from Bamboo and would have been from a joint in the stalk; finish lacquered in dark red, "oxblood". Note the superb craftsmanship of the box, the pleasing, natural indented shape; tiny incised grooves around the lid top, and around the edge of the top rim indicate old machinery, or hand-turning. Antique, crudely handmade, Wooden Box with handpainted floral and gilt decoration against black painted ground, with random overlays of paper-thin mother of pearl. Wood box with two hinges, thin aluminum-like lining to the interior (not tin, possibly partially painted silver), velvet on base. 9.25" x 6.25" x 5.75" tall.
