This small Box is likely turned from Bamboo and would have been from a joint in the stalk; finish lacquered in dark red, "oxblood". Note the superb craftsmanship of the box, the pleasing, natural indented shape; tiny incised grooves around the lid top, and around the edge of the top rim indicate old machinery, or hand-turning. While we do not guarantee this piece is older than 1900, we believe it may be very early 19th Century, and possibly even earlier. ...click for details
Antique, crudely handmade, Wooden Box with handpainted floral and gilt decoration against black painted ground, with random overlays of paper-thin mother of pearl. Wood box with two hinges, thin aluminum-like lining to the interior (not tin, possibly partially painted silver), velvet on base. 9.25" x 6.25" x 5.75" tall.
