This small Box is likely turned from Bamboo and would have been from a joint in the stalk; finish lacquered in dark red, "oxblood". Note the superb craftsmanship of the box, the pleasing, natural indented shape; tiny incised grooves around the lid top, and around the edge of the top rim indicate old machinery, or hand-turning. Insert a mirror or painting in this 19th Century Handcarved wood, Oval frame, original deep gold finish provides a lovely patina. 21st Century handpainted, slightly concave inner border of blue and aqua flowers. Antique, crudely handmade, Wooden Box with handpainted floral and gilt decoration against black painted ground, with random overlays of paper-thin mother of pearl. Handsome wood frame with very small handcarved pattern on each side of the black liner. Very good condition with some slight loss to gesso on the uppermost gold liner; some repainting to that liner.
