Pair of late 19th to early 20th Century, Japanese, Pigeon Blood Red, "Akasuke" (transparent red enamel over copper) Cloisonne Vases which have been drilled and made into matching lamps. Created in basse-taille (relief design which is formed into the copper and under the glaze), in a bamboo-leaf and bird pattern, and in the Japanese, ginbari style of the dimpled, foil background. Americana at its best; a 19th-20th Century, North Dakota Cabinetmaker, Herbert Asp, made this occasional table by hand, in the winter of 1917. His wife created the embroidery which is designed to stretch under the glass top. The embroidery is against a net-type backing, and is of silk thread; "before" photos show it against yellow satin background. Mathurin Moreau (1822-1912) was a sculptor extraordinaire in the 19th Century; also the son of noted French sculptor, Jean-Baptiste Moreau (1797-1855), and teacher to the esteemed sculptor, his namesake, Auguste Moreau (1834-1917). He exhibited often at the Paris Salon winning many awards, honors, and commissions. Late in his life, he became an administrator of the foundry, Val d'Osne, eventually creating many models for them.
